Joel is a broken man in a broken world who’s clinging to the little bit of meaning he has left. Joel’s mental health is — understandably — a mess, and we can sympathize with him a lot more Tommy Miller is very much alive in the events of The Last of Us, both in the video games and the series. According to what Joel learned about his brother, Tommy has been staying in Wyoming after he left the Fireflies when he became disillusioned by the group years before the events of the main story. The beginning of the storyline of The Last The Last of Us is based on a popular video game of the same name and, for the most part, the show stays loyal to its source material. Just like the series, the game follows Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) as they travel across the US in an attempt to use Ellie to find a cure for the viral fungus that turns humans into zombies and has taken over the world.
That is not the case in the show. There, Joel has bad knees and is struggling with partial hearing loss. However, the show’s overall narrative seems to follow that of the game. Joel doesn’t die in the first game. He manages to get Ellie to Salt Lake City, though he loses Tess along the way.
The story follows two people, Joel and Ellie, on a life-or-death, cross-country trip across an America ravaged by a brutal virus.
